On April 11, 2007, Master Corporal Allan Stewart, was called out to do a rescue mission for another vehicle that had been disabled by a land mine, while serving in Afghanistan. On their way out, Allan's vehicle was struck by an IED. The blast over turned their vehicle, and Master Corporal Stewart was killed instantly. Christa Stewart, his wife, has been quoted saying, "My Only solace, was knowing that he didn't suffer".
He left behind his high school sweet heart, Christa after 17 happy years together and 12 years of marriage. He also left behind 2 darling daughters, Brittany who was 12 at the time, and Sarah who was just days away from her 9th birthday.
After the death of their father, Brittany and Sarah attended "Hero Camp", for Military children. Both girls soon discovered that, although they were with many new found friends, they were still alone in certain aspects. Brittany and Sarah were in a group of kids who, when it came time for discussion groups, got to talk about their deployed parent coming home and about the excitement that was linked to that great event. They felt very out of place because they were the only two children there who had a parent who wouldn't be returning home from Afghanistan.
Brittany loved everything about the camp and loved making new friends but when she got home, she got to thinking that if she was feeling this way...that there may be other kids who would be feeling the exact same. She started a group on Face Book called "Support For Children of the Fallen", as a means for these kids to talk and share what they were going through. After a little while of trying to get into contact with these families who have lost a loved one, she decided that a Summer Camp, just like the "Hero Camp" she had attended, would be an even better idea. She thought that being able to come face to face with kids who are going through the same emotions and situations would help everyone. Being able to share, laugh, and become life long friends is the main idea of forming this Summer Camp. Brittany has chosen a name for this camp. She's thought that calling it "Allan's Angels Camp" would be perfect. She's chosen this name in honor of her father.
Brittany is hoping that this can be made into a yearly event. She has set everything in motion. She's asked family and friends for help with fundraising and getting a venue set up. So far, it looks like this camp will be a success but they won't be able to do it with out the generosity and support from everyone out there. The camp will be held in Petawawa, Ontario. CFB Petawawa, the Petawawa Military Base, has helped tremendously with getting a building for sleeping quarters and showers, and has even given access to all of the sports facilities available.
Bracelets with "Children Of The Fallen" written on them, are be sold for $2.00 each as a part of the fundraiser. All proceeds will go directly to the camp. This money will be needed for supplies, and prize for a sports day being held. Money is also needed to be raised to pay for meals thought out the week. Christa Stewart is asking that you kindly help us make this 15 year old girls wish come true. Help them make this camp a success. We want to promote life long connections with these children, and help them heal their broken hearts.
